TRWTF is that it's not so difficult to write an algorithm for copy and paste between areas of different sizes or shapes, yet 'Excel' can't handle it. Or maybe TRWTF is that my program that does this is written in C#.

We actually use this method but with a DIV rather than a span. Maybe I'm not thinking correctly, but why don't you just style the <a>?
