The "please give me the codes" syndrom

    Hello,

So this guy wrote about how to find hotmail passwords using some tool. He specifically said it is not for hacking, yet about half the responses are:

"I lost the password to blahblah@hotmail.com, please recover it for me".

    http://www.raymond.cc/blog/archives/2007/04/29/recover-windows-live-messenger-password-and-also-hotmail-password/

This made me cry out loud. It not that he said in a comment they have to run that program on THEIR computer but that they leave ther email adresses on that page.

    Great Folks keep going...

I already said that.  In a tag.  Which was conveniently already in the list.

Hate to nitpick, but that's not even right.  The actual quote was "My eyes!  The goggles do nothing!".

Re: The "please give me the codes" syndrom

Did anyone ever come up with a good theory about why this happens?  At first I was thinking that it had to be some kind of bot (especially because once one spanish comment showed up, it was followed by a bunch of others).  But looking at some of the e-mail addresses, it looks like at least some of them are from real people.  On the other hand, if they are real people, you'd think they'd just read the article which has exactly what they need.  That is, unless they are too stupid to be able to read, in which case how do they know how to use the internet to begin with?

    It's just...not...possible!!! *HEAD ASPLOD*

Fear not, you have yet to realise that all attempts to create an idiot-proof environment is impossible as our brains are not programmed to be able to downgrade, thus one cannot anticipate that the masses will do with your beloved program.

This shows that you weren't there a few years ago when a certain popular P2P client would crash when checking for update on startup (due to malformed XML). The guy who could fix that wasn't immediately available, so the forums put a sticky thread on every subforum and a red warning at top of every page about how to workaround the crash, but it didn't help all forums being flooded with "It's crashing!!!111"
Because 10 billion years' time is so fragile, so ephemeral... it arouses such a bittersweet, almost heartbreaking fondness.

The syndrome is actually very simple: People don't want to work. Reading a forum is work. They saw some keyword and their little heads said, lets no read anymore, lets just ask.

    Its typical human stupidity...

But it's actually harder to post a comment and check back for replies than just reading, or searching google, or anything easy like that. Don't they know it'll be EASIER for them to read / search?

And I don't beleive it's a bot, although if someone took the time to write a "me too" bot, it may be the best AI I ever seen...  Hmmm, which makes me think if I can write an auto-commenter on the SpectateSwamp thread... All the replies are the same, except bstorer who is actually funny sometimes...
