    Worst acronym in history

So at $DAYJOB, the latest management fad comes through, and it is decreed that we are all to attend some courses on $MGMT_FAD.  But not to worry, the state of Massachusetts is going to be footing part of the bill, though a program called the Workforce Training Fund.  I have thus been receiving regular messages concerning the WTF schedule, WTF classes, WTF activities, and so on.  There's even a WTF coordinator.

The WTF home page (the jokes just write themselves):

Can I nominate a product name?

NFuse (Citrix's web interface, name now dropped but lives on in URLs) sounds OK when pronounced "enfuse" but spell it out to a user and they'd say "n - f - use?"

What if the hokey cokey really IS what it's all about?

Though not an acronym, I always liked the Borland database name 'Paradox' it makes no sense as a product name at all.

Why can't I get my data out of this thing? We paid a fortune for it!

    Dunno, it's a Paradox

Approved partners who help employers apply for WTF grants.

No wonder there are enough of them to keep this site busy!!!!

Anyway, I hope they give out "WTF certified" badges.

Sorry to be a pedant, but "WTF" isn't an acronym, it's an abbreviation (a TLA, in fact).  It would only be an acronym if you could pronounce it, perhaps something like "wotoff"?

It makes me sad when two different words, like acronym and abbreviation, come to mean the same thing - it's such a waste.  See also mad/angry, smart/clever, dumb/stupid, etc.  What word do Americans use when they want an adjective to describe someone who is incapable of speech?

I believe that "mute" is the most common, though still plenty of "dumb."   Words have multiple meanings.  You should probably get over it.  Not that you're wrong about abbreviation/acronym.

    You're trolling, right?

You fail at pendantry. TLA = Three Letter Acronym. Not Three Letter Abbreviation.

Acronym - a word formed by the initial letters of a phrase or title.

Abbreviation - A shortened form of a word.

    WTF is clearly an acronym.

What word do you use for incorrect pedantry?

This is not a problem that requires infinite wisdom, Benj. This is a problem that requires enough neural organization to qualify as a vertebrate, apparently a stretch for some folks these days.

There's no widespread agreement on that.  (The Wikipedia article is a good example; no less than seven cited sources highlighting this disagreement.)  As there is no authoritative controlling standards body for the English language, it's impossible to call anything definitively correct or incorrect.  And if one goes by popular usage, an acronym is any initialism.

If you're going to be pedantic, at least be informed. ;-)

Interesting.  When *I* see the message index, I see me joining on 02-08-2008.  I'm guessing this has to do with some combination of time zone differences between you, me, and the server, and/or time zone localization being inconsistently applied.

Looks like it might be applying the timezone setting to the post dates, but not the date joined. Or something. I see "Joined on 09/02/2008" and the post was posted at "09/02/2008 10:34 AM" (my timezone is GMT+10). Speaking of which, this forum doesn't have a daylight savings option, so the times are all one hour wrong for me unless I manually adjust the timezone to GMT+11 >_>

I like the new transit system Seattle built, the South Lake Union Trolley. Yes, someone already went through the trouble of creating T-Shirts saying "Ride the S.L.U.T."
