    Criticize my website

    I created a website at www.functionalforums.com

Its still in its very early stages, but I think its pretty cool (and I intend on adding a lot more stuff to it) .

But I figure its done enough to be functional and I'd like other's opinions/questions/rude and angry comments on it.

You have text before the HTML tags in your page. Your site also seems to be very broken.

Its not broken! I just didn't put any quotes in the links.

But seriously thanks for trying it because I am trying to get rid of the bugs like that.

Please read up on how a UI is supposed to work, and also learn how to make a site without requiring javascript to do something so mundane as a redirect.

I have Javascript disabled by default.

Your site requries JavaScript just to load? I saw nothing.

Don't get caught up in technology. Worry about content and standards compliance first, then get into style, and after that, worry about eye candy and other gimmicks that require JavaScript.

(For the record, JavaScript is a terrific tecnology. I use it daily. But it shoudlnt' be required to see even the most basic part of the site.)

After messing with your site for a few minutes, I can honestly say I have absolutely no idea what your site does/is supposed to do.  Help.

Also, styling your links to look like normal text is annoying.

    QFT.

I clicked some stuff, but I still don't understand. Not that I was particularly inspired to try to understand.

I understood and found it too horrible to even attempt to criticise. He's doing something stupid and doing it very badly.

    That'll better be www.dysfunctionalforums.com.
Also, gf? Aren't you using the not-so-well-known Desktop *cough* Search, by any chance?

Bah, I prefer things old school.

The javascript was an oversight on my part.  There wasn't really a good reason for it other than laziness.  I removed it.

As for what exactly it is supposed to do.  It is similar in functionality to http://www.dailykos.com/  right now.  I intend to add more later.

    Thanks for your help.

DailyKos is a blog written by angry lefties. Your site… I just looked at it again, and still have no idea what it's supposed to do, but it sure doesn't look like a blog. Moar liek dysfunctionalforums.com amirite?

What would help is having some text that's different colors, or maybe some images, or something that stands out and says "something happens if you click here." (But don't make us guess what that something is.)

Doesn't do very much of anything, but you can "edit" parts of the page and insert arbitrary text. Too bad it strips tags, but you can still stuff in whatever you want.

No authentication, no verification. Very nicely done. .... not

Eh, what can I say I am not a designer.

I am getting the idea though that my site looks like a mess of text making it hard to navigate or understand whats going on.  I'd say it is easy, but then again my favorite 3d editors are zbrush and blender.

I kind of like my current design, but I think I will try to add something like http://particletree.com/ (The boxes around the links)

Now I probably need to do some actual content with that to make it understandable, but I think that would be a useful starting point

That was actually a bug that I thought was pretty cool and left in. No real good reason for it, but basically if a post isn't assigned to a user it will act like that.  Obviously of questionable usefulness, and once you edit it it belongs to you and no one else could come after you and change it.

I don't get it, what is it we're supposed to see? Regardless of browser and script filtering I get only a bunch of plain ugly normal text, all which are linked to som NULL object which doesn't work. Have you reinvented unformatted text? If so, kthnxbye, off to ICanHasCheezeburger.

um yeah. I've got some NullPointerException and ClassCastException too! Then I found many random pages and forms. One to register a user, but when I tried, I got a NullPointerException :-(

must be a joke, right? This crappy blob doesn't even come close to something any reasonable person would call a "website".

What is this, the bi-annual rate my website weeks.

And the level isn't improving either, i thought the cronojournal guy was as clueless as you can get, but you sure showed me.

Instead of pointing out what's wrong with it, i think i'm just going to stick to whats right.

    - you put the title tag in a header tag.

That's just about everything it i guess.

WHAT.  THE.  FUCK?  Am I on crazy pills?  Did that just happen?  What was that site?  There was grey, and like, some ugly pink or something?  I don't really remember.  I think I blacked out for a while there.

If there was even a single redeeming feature to that site, I didn't see it.

Actually this guy posted first. The chronoJournal is usable compared to this though.

PS: It's pretty now. As in Vista/XP theme service on pretty. As in I turn off the theming service ASAP pretty.

    Re: Criticize my website

    Sense.

    Your site makes none.

I'm not sure what your site is supposed to look like, but in Safari it looks like a bunch of poorly contrasting colored boxes, with words at the top, a sentence in the middle, and sometimes a number at the bottom. All of the text looks the same, but some of the chunks are links... that's rough.

If you want to see an example of a "simple" or "old school" web interface, look at Craigslist. It's basically the canonical example. I'm all for that sort of approach, especially when it's a community type of site... but you missed the mark (by a tremendous amount) here.

Nothing on that page is actually functional... was that the point? Is it some kind of sarcastic joke? I don't get it...
